Magnesium Oxide was my first Magnesium I tried because that time, I didn’t know that there are many different kinds of Magnesium that exist.
In a book by Dr Mark Sircus “Transdermal Magnesium Therapy”, he mentions that Magnesium Oxide has the poorest absorption rate out of all Magnesium compounds. After reading the book, I decided to try several kinds of Magnesium.
Here is the list of Mg I’ve tried so far
- Magnesium Oxide
- Magnesium Glycinate
- Magnesium Citrate
- Magnesium Malate
- Magnesium Chloride
- Magnesium L Threonate
Magnesium Oxide upset my stomach most. Mg oxide, the most affordable Mg can be found in most pharmacies and many supermarkets. If the label says “Magnesium”, most likely it is Mg oxide. If you don’t have any other Mg, then buy Mg oxide. Mg Oxide is better than No Mg.
Magnesium Glycinate is what I take every day during the day, and especially I take it on my workout days. It used to upset my stomach but does not upset anymore. The reason for that may be switching to another brand and perhaps less elemental Mg. (Mg Glycinate contains 8%-18% of elemental Mg depending on which kind) It is more expensive than Mg oxide but less expensive than Mg L Threonate. I feel that it effects to overall health as Mg L Threonate has more effects on the brain.
Magnesium Citrate, I don’t recall much experience. I just remembered that I preferred Mg Glycinate for some reason over citrate but I don’t remember why.
Magnesium Malate has sour taste even in tablet form. Because I could not find Mg Malate that did not have much additives ink capsules, I just eventually stopped taking Mg Malate and instead, continued taking Glycinate.
Magnesium Chloride is being absorbed by me transdermally since I read the book by Dr Mark Sircus. I used to take a bath with 1 pound of Magnesium Chloride a few times a week. Now, my body is not as deficient on Mg anymore as I used to, I take it 1-2 times a month. I spray Magnesium oil here and then. I felt most Mg effect from taking Magnesium bath. Mg bath with baking soda which is a method from the book is a complete miracle. I’d highly recommend the bath if you are new to Mg journey. Make sure you add baking soda as well as Mg chloride. Because I apply via skin, it never upsets my stomach.
Magnesium L Threonate is absolutely amazing. The only Mg applied orally that never upset my stomach is Mg L Threonate, but that is because there is only 144mg elemental Magnesium in 1 serving/2000mg. If you only take 1 serving of Mg L Threonate which tends to be 4 caps, you would only get 144mg of elemental Mg. That is not enough for me. Mg L Threonate is more expensive; if I want to get 400mg of elemental Mg a day, I would have to take about 11 caps. My friend told me that his memory improved for playing chess after taking L Threonate. On amazon, it costs about $30/bottle which contains 100 caps. This mean, the bottle would not even last 10 days! Yes, it is definitely more pricey than others.
If you have a tight budget, I would start with Magnesium Glycinate; if not, take bath with Mg Chloride and baking soda and take Mg Glycinate and Mg L Threonate.
If you have a kidney problem, you’ll need to consult with a physician. If you don’t have a kidney problem, overtaking can upset your stomach.
